The Aurian Chronicles - Chapter 1

                     Chapter 1

The Full moon set over an otherwise Chilly night sky. The sight of it was unusual, due to the fact raindrops started to pour down over New York City. A man slowly sipped his fifteenth shot of bourbon as he glanced over his shoulder to see a loud-mouthed overweight man trying to grab at a waitress’ rear end. “Listen, buddy, I don’t know what you’re running from, but it sure isn’t alcohol poisoning. Maybe enjoy some fresh air?” asked the bartender. The dark-clothed man sighed. “You see that guy over there? That’s Albert Farley. He’s wanted for fifteen counts of sexual harassment, and about triple that in murder” he said as he paid for a full bottle. “And?" The bartender asked with a frown. "He’s dime a dozen ‘round these parts, not much we can.. “ The darkly dressed stranger pulled out a handgun and exclaimed, “The most famous of his murders was the chief of the NYPD’s six year old son.” The grim stranger then spun around and shot the man once in the head. This action caused panic among the normal patrons, and they began to scream and run. Albert’s entourage quickly pulled out their weapons and drew rapid fire upon the man. An ultra-bright neon purple light enveloped The dark stranger as he shouted above the commotion, “Hi there boys, name’s Darkness, and I was paid good money to Bring down Albert Farley." Darkness grinned as taunted, "Luckily you guys aren’t on my checklist, but I don’t mind a freebie here or there… If you leave, I’ll pay your tabs, if you fire…” He was unable to continue his speech because they had already begun shooting.  Allowing the bullets to phase through him, Darkness sighed.“Well, then I guess you’ll just provide Farley company”  Black tendrils began to slowly come out from his spine, reaching out and then wrapping around each of the hoodlum's necks. In unison, an instantaneous sound of sickening snaps was made, killing them all.  Darkness then made a quick phone call. He looked over at the frightened and cowering bartender.  Darkness pulled out a small back and left it on the counter. “A few hundred for your troubles… don’t worry, cleanup has been covered.” He said as he scooped up his bottle of bourbon to take on the road with him.

Darkness gave a weary sigh as he knocked on the back door of a quaint little suburban house.  He was still nursing his bottle of bourbon, as a middle-aged man in pajamas slowly opened the door. “You know I could arrest you for Public drunkenness right now!” the man exclaimed as he pulled out the reward money.  Darkness just laughed, “but instead, you are paying me for doing what our legal system failed to do. Ain’t life strange?" Darkness took the money before the man had a chance to respond. He then turned and headed off. Before he was out of listening distance, Darkness commented, “If you need me for more missions, you can contact my boss. Next time without the swat team, he almost missed his little girl’s dinner!” After slinking into the driver's seat of his 1970 Dodge Challenger, Darkness pulled out his Cell Phone and dialed up a number.  “Silver? Yeah, it’s done, I’m on my way home." Darkness explained, "I should be there by the time dinner starts to cool… love ya too my Flawless one.” he said as he hung up. Contemplating the successful and monetarily fruitful mission, Darkness exclaimed to himself, "It is good to be a mercenary!"
